India’s YouTube creator ecosystem is becoming an increasingly important part of the country’s digital economy, contributing more than ₹18,000 crore to GDP and supporting over 9.6 lakh full-time equivalent jobs in 2025, according to an Oxford Economics report cited by YouTube.
The findings highlight the growing economic footprint of online creators, whose activities now extend beyond video production into advertising, technology, production services, talent development and other supporting businesses.
The creator economy is also expanding beyond India’s largest metropolitan centres, with emerging production and creative hubs developing in cities such as Jaipur, Lucknow and Kochi.

The number of Indian YouTube channels generating revenue of at least six figures in rupee terms also increased by more than 30% year-on-year, indicating continued growth in monetised digital content.
For creators who earn money through the platform, YouTube has become an important source of livelihood. The report said 73% of monetising creators surveyed consider YouTube their primary source of income.
Creator Economy Generates Jobs Beyond Content Production
The economic contribution of the platform extends beyond creators themselves.

Add INDYASTORY on GoogleThe report said more than 15% of watch time for content produced by Indian channels came from viewers outside India.
Regional-language and hyper-local content are contributing to this international reach, allowing creators to serve audiences interested in Indian culture, entertainment, education and lifestyle from around the world.
The international reach of Indian content is also relevant to media companies. According to the report, 81% of media companies with a presence on YouTube said the platform helped them reach global audiences.
Indian Channels Upload More Than 160 Million Hours of Content
The volume of content being produced in India is also substantial.
More than 160 million hours of content were uploaded by Indian channels during the year, according to the report.
The figure illustrates the scale of India’s digital video ecosystem and the growing number of creators, production teams and businesses participating in online media.
The expansion is not limited to entertainment. Indian YouTube channels increasingly cover education, news, technology, business, gaming, cooking, culture, travel and regional-language programming.
YouTube Expands Digital Skills Initiatives
YouTube said it is working with the Ministry of Information & Broadcasting and the Indian Institute of Creative Technologies (IICT) on digital-skilling efforts under the “Create with AI” initiative.
The initiative comes as artificial intelligence increasingly becomes part of the content-production process.
YouTube is also working with the Ministry of Culture on efforts to preserve heritage and promote traditional folk and tribal music to audiences around the world.
Such initiatives connect the platform’s creator ecosystem with broader efforts around digital skills, cultural preservation and global distribution.
AI Tools Reshape Content Creation
Artificial intelligence is also becoming an increasingly important part of YouTube’s product strategy.
The company is rolling out AI-powered production capabilities, including conversational AI editing for Shorts and agentic channel-management features through Ask Studio.
These tools are designed to reduce some of the technical and administrative work involved in creating and managing digital content.
For independent creators and small production teams, easier access to editing and channel-management tools could help them produce content at greater scale.
YouTube Introduces AI Authenticity Measures
The growing use of generative AI also creates challenges around digital authenticity.
YouTube said it is introducing AI Likeness Detection, along with labels and disclosures for synthetic content.
The measures are intended to help address situations where artificial intelligence is used to create or alter content involving a person’s likeness.
As AI-generated video and audio become more sophisticated, platforms face increasing pressure to provide transparency around synthetic media while preserving opportunities for legitimate creative use.
Creator Economy Becomes Part of India’s Digital Growth Story
The Oxford Economics figures underline how India’s online creator ecosystem has expanded from individual content production into a broader economic network.
Creators generate demand for editing, production, marketing and other professional services, while successful channels can support teams and businesses of their own.
At the same time, regional creators are helping distribute Indian-language and culturally specific content to audiences both domestically and internationally.
With YouTube continuing to invest in creator tools, AI capabilities and digital-skilling programmes, India’s creator economy is becoming an increasingly visible component of the country’s wider digital economy.
