India’s merchandise exports recorded strong growth across several major markets during April–August FY27, with shipments to Africa rising 47% and exports to the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) increasing 56%, according to Commerce Ministry data cited in the supplied report.

The figures point to a broader expansion in India’s overseas trade as exporters reach markets across Africa, Asia and Europe. The growth also comes amid efforts to diversify export destinations and reduce dependence on a limited number of markets.

Exports to Africa reached $26.19 billion during the five-month period, up from $17.83 billion in the corresponding period a year earlier. Shipments to ASEAN climbed to $23.08 billion, while exports to North-East Asia increased 37% to $21.03 billion.

Africa Emerges as a Key Growth Market

Africa was among the strongest-performing destinations for Indian merchandise exports in April–August 2026.

The continent accounted for 12.2% of India’s total exports during the period, compared with 9.7% in the same months last year, according to the supplied data.

East Africa recorded particularly strong growth, with exports nearly doubling to $8.95 billion, an increase of 94%.

Shipments to the Southern African Customs Union (SACU) rose 53% to $5.09 billion, while exports to North Africa increased 33% to $4.03 billion.

West Africa registered more moderate growth of 7%, with exports reaching $5.57 billion.

The regional figures show that export performance varied across the continent, with East Africa recording the fastest expansion among the listed markets. Sustaining that growth will depend on demand conditions, trade access, logistics and the competitiveness of Indian products.

ASEAN Exports Increase 56%

Indian exports to ASEAN rose 56% to $23.08 billion in April–August FY27, making the Southeast Asian bloc another major contributor to the reported growth.

ASEAN comprises Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam. The bloc represents an important regional market for Indian manufacturers and exporters across a range of goods.

Exports to North-East Asia also performed strongly, increasing 37% to $21.03 billion. Shipments to South Asia and other European countries rose 24%, according to the supplied figures.

The gains across multiple regions suggest that Indian export growth was not limited to a single destination. However, the reported figures alone do not establish how much of the increase came from higher shipment volumes, price changes, product composition or other factors.

Exports to West Asia Show Signs of Recovery

India’s shipments to West Asia have been affected by regional conflict and trade disruption, according to the supplied report. The data indicate a recovery in monthly export values during the period.

Exports to West Asia stood at $4.2 billion in April and rose to $5.01 billion in August. The report cited exports of $6.48 billion in January 2026, before the period of disruption.

The increase between April and August suggests that shipments recovered during those months. However, August exports remained below the January figure, meaning the data do not show a complete return to the earlier level.

The pace of any further recovery will depend on regional security, shipping conditions, demand and the ability of exporters to maintain trade routes.

Indian Vehicle and Electrical Exports Record Strong Growth

The growth extended beyond regional destinations to several product categories.

Exports of light-duty trucks increased 71% during April–August FY27, while shipments of medium-duty trucks grew 67%, according to the reported data. The increases point to stronger overseas demand for these vehicle categories, although the figures provided do not specify their contribution to total export growth.

Optical fibre and cable exports rose 158% to $483 million. Exports of electrical control boards nearly doubled to $303 million.

The reported growth in these products was supported by demand in markets including the United States, China, Singapore and Poland.

Optical fibre and cable products are important to telecommunications and digital infrastructure, while electrical control boards are used in industrial and electrical systems. Export gains in these categories may therefore reflect demand from infrastructure, manufacturing and technology-related markets.

Nevertheless, sustained growth will depend on global investment trends, competition from other exporting countries and the ability of Indian manufacturers to meet quality, pricing and delivery requirements.

India’s Total Merchandise Exports Rise 18.51%

India’s total merchandise exports increased 18.51% to $259.89 billion in April–September FY27, compared with $219.30 billion in the corresponding period of the previous financial year, according to the figures supplied.

The six-month total covers a longer period than the regional figures, which relate to April–August. The two sets of figures should therefore be kept separate when comparing growth rates.

The reported increase indicates a stronger export performance during the first half of FY27. Regional diversification and growth in selected manufactured goods appear alongside that wider trend, although further breakdowns would be needed to determine the contribution of individual markets and product categories to the overall rise.

What the Export Trends Mean for India’s Economy

The reported growth across Africa, ASEAN and North-East Asia highlights the importance of expanding trade relationships and strengthening India’s access to international markets.

Diversifying export destinations can provide businesses with more opportunities to sell their products and may help reduce reliance on any one market. At the same time, headline export growth does not automatically translate into higher profitability for every exporter, as companies continue to face freight costs, currency movements, regulatory requirements and international competition.

The performance of vehicles, optical fibre and electrical control boards also draws attention to the role of manufactured and technology-related goods in India’s export mix.

Going forward, exporters and policymakers will be watching whether the reported growth can be sustained across regions and product categories. Monthly trade data, global demand conditions and changes in shipping and geopolitical risks will help determine whether the momentum continues through the remainder of FY27.
