Punjab National Bank says it will honour genuine claims as complaints about missing savings and fixed deposits undergo investigation. The reported ₹35 crore figure remains an allegation, not a confirmed loss assessment.
Greater Noida, October 30, 2026: Punjab National Bank has said it will honour all genuine customer claims following allegations of financial irregularities at its Greater Noida branch. The lender reported settling three claims totalling ₹43 lakh while examining other complaints on priority, according to a Press Trust of India report.
In its statement issued on October 29, PNB said it was cooperating with authorities, checking the reported discrepancies and addressing affected customers’ concerns. It also promised action against anyone found responsible.
What the different amounts mean
Three figures have emerged in coverage of the case, each describing a different aspect of the complaints:

|---|---|
| ₹43 lakh | Three customer claims PNB said it had settled |
| More than ₹11.24 crore | Alleged losses involving 21 individuals cited in the reported complaint |
| Around ₹35 crore | A broader estimate put forward by local account holders |
The ₹35 crore estimate should not be described as a final, independently established fraud total. The bank’s verification and police investigation will be important in determining the extent of any losses.
Customers report missing deposits
Account holders have alleged that money disappeared from savings accounts and fixed deposits without their authorisation. Some said they received no transaction alerts.
Police registered a case at Beta-2 police station, and several employees, including the branch manager, were suspended, according to PTI. The investigation remains underway; suspension does not establish criminal guilt.
What customers should do about a disputed balance
For an affected customer, the immediate task is to document the discrepancy and obtain a written acknowledgement from the bank.
Report the issue through an official channel. Contact the bank using details on its official website, banking application or account documents. Explain whether the dispute concerns an unfamiliar debit, a missing fixed deposit, an unexpected closure or an incorrect balance.

Add INDYASTORY on GoogleKeep a complete record. Preserve account statements, deposit receipts, transaction alerts, screenshots and correspondence. Submit a written complaint listing the disputed amounts and dates, and retain its reference number. Ask the bank for a written explanation of the entries being challenged.
Request protection against further unauthorised activity. If electronic banking access may have been compromised, notify the bank immediately and ask it to secure the affected payment channels. RBI’s directions require banks to take immediate steps to prevent further unauthorised transactions after receiving a customer’s report.
When to report suspected cyber fraud
Customers who suspect that money was transferred through online fraud should promptly call 1930 and report the incident through the government’s National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal.

Add INDYASTORY on GoogleThe Ministry of Home Affairs identifies these as official cybercrime reporting channels. A cybercrime report should accompany direct notification to the bank; customers should retain acknowledgements from both.
A disputed branch transaction or missing deposit should not automatically be labelled a cyberattack. Establishing how the funds were moved is part of the investigation.
Does RBI require reimbursement?
RBI’s framework for unauthorised electronic banking transactions distinguishes between bank responsibility, third-party breaches and customer negligence.
Under that framework, a customer has zero liability where the unauthorised transaction results from contributory fraud, negligence or deficiency on the bank’s part. For certain third-party breaches, reporting within three working days of receiving the bank’s communication also provides zero liability.
Where a customer has shared payment credentials, the rules allocate losses differently before and after the transaction is reported. These provisions concern unauthorised electronic transactions; their application to a particular complaint depends on the facts.
Customers should therefore seek a written decision explaining the bank’s findings and the basis for any reimbursement or rejection.
How to escalate an unresolved complaint
First raise the complaint with the bank and use its published escalation process. If the response remains unsatisfactory, customers can check eligibility for escalation through RBI’s Complaint Management System, following the applicable Ombudsman requirements and timelines.
PNB’s assurance is significant for affected depositors, but it is not a published settlement schedule for every complaint. Further updates are needed on the verified loss amount, outstanding claims and findings of the investigation.
