Amazon’s exposure extends beyond shares: it is also a major computing supplier to the AI company, giving it a different investment position from traditional venture funds.
Anthropic’s planned stock-market listing could deliver substantial gains to its backers, with Amazon positioned to benefit through both its investment holdings and its cloud computing business.
The scale of that opportunity is visible in Amazon’s quarterly filing. As of June 30, 2026, the company valued its Anthropic convertible notes at approximately $97.9 billion.
That figure is an estimated investment value, rather than money Amazon has received from selling shares. The distinction matters when assessing headlines about an IPO windfall.

Convertible notes begin as debt but can become equity under specified conditions.
Anthropic’s S-1 lists approximately $6.2 billion of outstanding principal under Amazon’s notes and roughly 1.84 billion shares issuable on conversion, subject to the relevant terms.
Amazon separately disclosed a $10 billion investment in Anthropic’s nonvoting preferred stock during the second quarter.
These instruments should be assessed individually. Outstanding principal, investment cost, estimated fair value and eventual sale proceeds describe different measures; they cannot be substituted for one another.
Why paper gains are not an IPO payday
A public listing can establish a market price and create a route towards liquidity. It does not mean every existing investor sells immediately.

Conversion terms and dilution also matter. An estimate based on a private funding round can differ from the value public-market investors assign to the same business.
Amazon’s reported note valuation therefore demonstrates the scale of its exposure without establishing its eventual cash return.

Anthropic reported a $72.4 billion change in the fair value of convertible notes, derivative liabilities and SAFEs for the first half of 2026. Its filing says increases in enterprise valuation were the primary driver.
This accounting adjustment should be distinguished from the cost of running the business.
A liability linked to an investment’s value can increase as the underlying company becomes more valuable. That movement can affect reported earnings without representing an equivalent cash payment during the period.
Readers evaluating Anthropic’s financial performance should consequently examine operating results and cash flows alongside headline net income or loss.
AWS creates another commercial relationship
Amazon’s potential benefit is not limited to investment appreciation.
Its quarterly report describes an expansion of Anthropic’s existing AWS commitment by more than $100 billion over ten years, with contractual obligations related to AWS chip performance.
A spending commitment is not the same as revenue already recognised, and revenue is not the same as profit. Providing computing capacity requires infrastructure, equipment, energy and ongoing operating expenditure.
Nevertheless, the arrangement gives Amazon a commercial relationship with Anthropic that differs from a venture fund’s ownership stake.
The comparison with venture investors needs care
A small ownership percentage can still represent a substantial investment value in a very large company.
Comparing investors solely by percentage ownership can therefore obscure the size of their positions. Comparing them solely by estimated dollar value can also mislead if their purchase costs and investment dates differ.
A meaningful return comparison requires both the value of a holding and the capital invested to acquire it.
What the IPO will clarify
The final offering documents should provide a firmer basis for assessing dilution, conversion arrangements and any shares existing holders plan to sell.
Until those details and a public trading price are established, Amazon is best described as having substantial potential upside.
Its position combines financial exposure to Anthropic with a long-term supplier relationship. The eventual investment return and the profitability of that cloud business will need to be measured separately.
