Selected employees in India, the US, the UK and Canada can apply, with eligibility determined by their team and internal job level.
Microsoft has introduced a voluntary exit programme covering selected teams in four countries, with about 60,000 employees reportedly eligible to consider leaving with financial and career transition support.
The company announced the Voluntary Exit Offer on October 26. Its public communication confirms that eligible employees at internal level 70 and below in participating teams across India, the United States, the United Kingdom and Canada can receive the offer.
The eligibility figure describes the potential reach of the programme. It does not mean 60,000 employees have accepted packages or will leave Microsoft.

Eligibility depends on more than an employee’s location and job level.
Microsoft said individual businesses would participate according to their priorities, customer commitments and staffing requirements. Consequently, employees at the same level in different teams may have different eligibility outcomes.
Chief people officer Amy Coleman described the initiative as providing a supported transition for employees considering opportunities outside Microsoft, while giving participating businesses flexibility to adjust their workforce.
The company said eligible employees would receive individual offer details by email.
What has been reported about the packages?
Business Insider reported that the US offers it reviewed followed Microsoft’s standard severance arrangements, with payments varying by level and tenure. Reported provisions included a 39-week base-pay ceiling for levels 67 and below, 12 months of salary at level 68, and continued stock vesting and health coverage.

For employees in India, the individual offer documentation will therefore be essential for understanding the applicable payment, benefits and conditions.
When would employees leave?
According to Business Insider, eligible employees have until early December to decide, with departures expected at year-end.

Add INDYASTORY on GoogleMicrosoft’s public announcement describes the programme as time-limited but does not specify a universal acceptance deadline. Employees should use the dates in their individual offer rather than assume every location follows the same timetable.
How the offer fits Microsoft’s AI spending
Reuters reported that the buyout initiative comes as Microsoft seeks to contain costs alongside substantial investment in AI infrastructure.
However, the existence of the programme does not establish that each eligible role is being replaced by artificial intelligence. Microsoft’s published explanation focuses on changing workforce needs and business flexibility.
The distinction matters when assessing the announcement: investment priorities provide context, while the reasons for an individual team’s participation may differ.
What remains unknown
The number of employees who will accept the offer has not been established by the sources reviewed for this report. Neither has a country-level breakdown of eventual departures.
An estimate of 20,000 exits would depend on assuming a particular acceptance rate. It should not be presented as a company forecast.
Likewise, the offer does not by itself establish that further compulsory reductions will follow in 2027. That would require a separate announcement or substantiated reporting.
What employees should check
The practical details sit in each employee’s offer: the acceptance deadline, final employment date, payment calculation, treatment of unvested shares and duration of benefits.
Employees should also clarify whether accepting requires additional approvals and when the decision becomes binding.
These details determine the value and implications of a package more accurately than a global headline or a severance example from another country.
