Actor Adah Sharma has shared her perspective on the ongoing discussion surrounding Janhvi Kapoor’s role in Peddi, where the film has faced criticism over its portrayal of the female lead. The controversy has sparked wider conversations about representation and responsibility in mainstream cinema.
In an exclusive conversation, Adah Sharma addressed the debate while also speaking about broader industry practices and the decision-making process behind film roles.
“I Am Not in Peddi, So I Cannot Judge”
Responding to questions about the backlash against Peddi, Adah Sharma clarified that she has not watched the film and is not associated with the project.
She stated that opinions on such matters can vary significantly depending on one’s proximity to the project, and therefore refrained from commenting directly on the controversy involving Janhvi Kapoor.
“Responsibility Lies With the Entire Film Ecosystem”
Adah Sharma emphasized that discussions about representation in cinema should not be limited to actors alone.
According to her, responsibility extends across the entire filmmaking process, including writers, directors, costume designers, and production teams.
She noted that even a single creative decision can influence audience perception, adding that meaningful change in cinema is gradual rather than immediate.
On Evolving Female Characters in Cinema
Speaking more broadly about roles offered to women, Adah highlighted the importance of layered and multidimensional characters.
She said she values scripts where female roles reflect complexity, emotion, strength, humour, and unpredictability—reflecting real-life personalities rather than one-dimensional portrayals.
Industry Context: Ongoing Debate Around ‘Peddi’
The remarks come amid ongoing debate around Peddi, a Ram Charan-led film that has faced scrutiny for its depiction of female characters. Following criticism, filmmaker Buchi Babu Sana reportedly issued an apology and modified certain scenes.
Despite the controversy, the film has performed strongly at the box office, reportedly crossing ₹150 crore in India.
Adah Sharma’s Upcoming Film ‘Governor’
On the professional front, Adah Sharma will next appear in ‘Governor’, directed by Chinmay Mandlekar and starring Manoj Bajpayee in the lead role.
The film is scheduled for a theatrical release on June 12, 2026, and is set to face competition from other major releases, including projects led by Kangana Ranaut and Imtiaz Ali.
