After making her Bollywood debut with Aankhon Ki Gustaakhiyan last year, Shanaya Kapoor is preparing for her next big release, Tu Yaa Main. Directed by Bejoy Nambiar, the romantic survival thriller is the Hindi adaptation of the Thai action-horror film The Pool.
The film pairs Shanaya with Kho Gaye Hum Kahan actor Adarsh Gourav, with the story revolving around two individuals trapped in an abandoned swimming pool while trying to escape a deadly crocodile.
Ahead of the film’s release, Shanaya opened up about her relationship with social media feedback — and why she doesn’t shy away from negative comments.
Shanaya Kapoor on reading criticism online
In an exclusive chat with Zoom, the actress admitted that she regularly goes through comments about herself on social media. According to Shanaya, not all negativity is trolling — especially when it relates to her work.
“I think there are different kinds of comments,” she said. “If it’s about my work — how I’m dancing or performing — then even if it’s very negative or said harshly, I take it as constructive feedback. That’s something I owe my audience.”
Shanaya explained that while such comments can sting, she views them as a necessary reality check rather than personal attacks.
“Maybe it’s not said in the nicest way, and it pinches a little, but it keeps you grounded,” she added.
What she ignores — and what she takes seriously
The actress made it clear that she draws a firm line between feedback and personal remarks. Comments targeting her appearance, body type, or facial features are ones she consciously chooses to ignore.
“If it’s about how I look or comments on my face or body, those are things I don’t pay attention to,” she said. “But feedback about my work — that’s important.”
Shanaya also acknowledged that reading comments can sometimes be emotionally difficult, but avoiding them entirely feels counterproductive to her.
“I’m here for the audience’s acceptance. How will I understand them if I keep running away from what they’re saying?” she said.
Whenever online criticism feels overwhelming, Shanaya turns to her mother, Maheep Kapoor, whom she trusts deeply and considers her closest confidante.

In Tu Yaa Main, Shanaya essays the role of a social media influencer named Avani Shah, popularly known as Miss Vanity. Adarsh Gourav plays a rapper, and has also recorded a song titled Naam Karu Bada for the Hindi version of the film.
