On the occasion of Guru Purnima, filmmaker Karan Johar took a nostalgic walk down memory lane, sharing an emotional tribute to two people he says transformed his life forever—filmmaker Aditya Chopra and Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan.

In a heartfelt Instagram post accompanied by throwback photographs, Karan reflected on two defining conversations that inspired him to pursue filmmaking and ultimately shaped one of Bollywood’s most successful directorial careers.

“Two Conversations Changed My Life”

Recalling the first life-changing moment, Karan revealed that it happened late at night when Aditya Chopra invited him to assist on the sets of Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge (DDLJ).

At the time, Karan was preparing to leave for higher studies, uncertain about his future. According to him, Aditya strongly encouraged him to stay back and pursue direction, insisting that filmmaking was where he truly belonged.

Karan shared that the conversation stayed with him all night. The next morning, he approached his father, legendary producer Yash Johar, and requested a year to work on a film set before deciding on his future.

He remembered his father asking whether he knew what he would actually do on a film set. Karan admitted he did not, but promised to work hard and learn everything he could. His father encouraged him, explaining that discipline could make someone a producer, but becoming a director required genuine passion.

Karan said it was Aditya Chopra who recognized that passion long before anyone else did.

Shah Rukh Khan’s Promise That Became Reality

The filmmaker also revisited another unforgettable memory involving Shah Rukh Khan during a trip to Switzerland.

Karan recalled standing on a hilltop when Shah Rukh confidently told him that he would become a director and that he would star in his very first film.

Initially, Karan thought the actor was joking. However, Shah Rukh remained committed to his promise and even discussed the idea with Yash Johar after they returned to India.

Years later, that promise became reality with Kuch Kuch Hota Hai, Karan Johar’s directorial debut released in 1998. Starring Shah Rukh Khan, Kajol, and Rani Mukerji, the romantic drama became one of Bollywood’s biggest blockbusters and established Karan as one of the industry’s leading filmmakers.

Thanking the Two Men Who Believed in Him

Concluding his Guru Purnima message, Karan expressed deep gratitude to both Aditya Chopra and Shah Rukh Khan for believing in him before he believed in himself.

He wrote that everything he has achieved—his successes, failures, strengths, and lessons—has been possible because of their unwavering support and encouragement. He also extended his wishes to every mentor who selflessly helps nurture new talent and create opportunities for others.

A Partnership That Shaped Modern Bollywood

The bond between Karan Johar and Shah Rukh Khan has produced several acclaimed films over the years, including Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham, Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna, and My Name Is Khan. Meanwhile, Aditya Chopra’s early mentorship played a pivotal role in introducing Karan to filmmaking through DDLJ, widely regarded as one of Indian cinema’s most iconic films.

Karan’s Guru Purnima message offered fans a rare glimpse into the relationships that helped launch his career, highlighting the lasting impact mentors can have on shaping creative journeys.

Why Guru Purnima Matters

Guru Purnima is celebrated across India as a day to express gratitude to teachers, mentors, and guides who influence personal and professional growth. In the film industry, many actors and filmmakers use the occasion to acknowledge those who helped shape their careers, making Karan Johar’s tribute especially meaningful for fans and aspiring storytellers alike.
