The much-awaited judgment in the brutal rape and murder of an on-duty doctor at R.G. Kar Medical College and Hospital, which sparked nationwide outrage and prolonged protests, will be delivered on Saturday, January 18, 2025.

The trial in the rape and murder case of a junior doctor at R.G. Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata, which occurred in August last year, is complete. The verdict is likely to be pronounced on January 18 by a Sealdah court.

In December last year, the victim's parents moved the Calcutta High Court, seeking a fresh investigation into the case and requesting that the court order a new probe. They expressed a lack of confidence in the ongoing investigation led by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI). The victim's lawyer emphasized the demand for maximum punishment for those involved, noting that the supplementary chargesheet had not been submitted and the investigation was still ongoing. The victim's father echoed concerns about the investigation and called for further probe into the case.

The victim’s mother also criticized the investigation, stating that while the police had made some progress in five days, the CBI took five months. She stressed that although they knew Sanjay Roy was the culprit, he could not have acted alone in a 24×7 hospital setting. She insisted that all those involved should be punished for them to feel justice had been served.

In December, the Sealdah court granted bail to former Tala police station officer-in-charge Abhijit Mondal and Sandip Ghosh, the former principal of R.G. Kar Medical College and Hospital, for allegedly tampering with evidence and attempting to cover up the case. The court granted them bail after the CBI failed to file charges within the 90-day statutory period. Mondal was accused of delaying the FIR, while Ghosh was accused of tampering with evidence. Mondal was released, while Ghosh remains in judicial remand in another unrelated case.

The case, which sparked widespread protests, led the Calcutta High Court to transfer the investigation to the CBI, citing lack of confidence in the Kolkata Police’s probe. The trial began on November 11, three months after the incident, and the proceedings were held in-camera.

CBI lawyer Partho Sarathi Dutta confirmed that the CBI had requested the maximum punishment for the accused and that the investigation was still ongoing.
