R G Kar Rape and Murder: "First Step Towards Justice," Say Parents of Slain Medic
The parents also expressed hope that more individuals involved in the crime will be apprehended "in the future."
The father of the slain medic said on Saturday that they were pleased the Sealdah court had highlighted the lapses of both the police and the authorities at RG Kar hospital when the heinous crime occurred on August 9.
The parents also expressed hope that more individuals involved in the crime would be apprehended "in the future."
“I am happy to the extent that the judge criticized the role of the police and hospital authorities. He mentioned that the actions of the then MSVP (medical superintendent and vice principal) and the principal created confusion. We got what we wanted,” the doctor’s father told Metro.
Earlier, he had thanked the judge in the courtroom after it was mentioned that the 160-page judgment to be delivered on Monday would "criticize" certain roles of the police and hospital staff.
Former RG Kar principal Sandip Ghosh is now in custody in a case of alleged financial irregularities at the medical college, which the CBI is investigating. Former MSVP Sanjay Vashisth was transferred after the junior doctors' protests.
The parents were present in the courtroom on Saturday when additional district and sessions judge Anirban Das delivered the verdict. The judge stated he was "confused" about some actions of the then HOD (head of department), MSVP, and principal of RG Kar.
After leaving the courtroom at 2:53 pm, the parents returned for discussions with their lawyers. When they emerged again, they briefly spoke with journalists waiting outside.
“We've crossed the first step toward justice. Sanjay (Roy) has been found guilty, and the punishment will be announced on Monday,” said the doctor’s father. “We want the maximum punishment for him.”
“Our fight will continue. We believe the judge has shed light on others involved in the crime,” he added. “It’s not about whether we are satisfied or not... Our daughter will not come back.”
The doctor’s mother urged people not to lose hope. “There is no reason to lose hope. Others involved will also be caught. The process of justice will continue,” she said.
