"R.G. Kar Case Final Verdict: Court Sentences Sanjay Roy to Life in Prison"

Kolkata, 20th January: In a high-profile ruling, Sanjay Roy has been sentenced to life imprisonment by Sealdah Court in Kolkata for the rape and murder of a doctor at R.G. Kar Medical College and Hospital.
The Additional District and Sessions Judge, Sealdah, Anirban Das, stated that while the crime was heinous, it did not meet the criteria for a “rarest of rare” case, and thus awarded a life sentence instead of the death penalty.
Roy, who had been employed at the hospital, was convicted for the sexual assault and brutal murder of a young doctor at the medical college, in a case that shocked both the medical community and the nation. The crime occurred in 2024, and after a long and contentious trial, the court has now rendered its decision.
The R.G. Kar case has sparked widespread debate about the governance of state-run healthcare institutions, with calls for more stringent oversight and accountability measures.
