EU Seeks to Enhance Strategic Partnership with India: President Ursula
Davos, Jan 21 (PTI) — European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen announced on Tuesday that her new Commission’s first trip would be to India, aiming to enhance the strategic partnership with "the largest country and democracy in the world."
In a special address at the World Economic Forum Annual Meeting, she emphasized the European Commission’s commitment to supporting local industries in its partner countries, noting that such growth benefits both sides.
"We have partners across the world, from Africa to the Indo-Pacific," she said.
"The first trip of my new Commission will be to India. Together with Prime Minister Narendra Modi, we aim to upgrade the strategic partnership with the largest country and democracy in the world," she declared.
After being re-elected by the European Parliament for a second term in July last year, Ursula von der Leyen's new Commission officially began its work recently. Her current term will run until 2029.
She remarked, "I believe we should also aim for mutual benefits in our discussions with China. All continents must confront the growing burden of climate change, which cannot be ignored."
Von der Leyen affirmed that the Paris Agreement remains humanity's best hope, and Europe will remain committed to its goals.
She noted that the world has entered a new era of intense geostrategic competition, emphasizing that breaking ties in the global economy serves no one’s interest.
"Europe will continue to seek cooperation with our long-standing allies and any country with which we share mutual interests," she added.
