The PM Modi-led Union Cabinet approved the setting up of the 8th Pay Commission on Thursday. The last Pay Commission was established in 2016, and its term will end in 2026.
In a significant move, the Union Cabinet on Thursday approved the establishment of the 8th Pay Commission to revise the salaries of central government employees and allowances for pensioners. The decision was made during a Cabinet meeting chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw confirmed. The 7th Pay Commission, which was set up in 2016, will end its term in 2026.
Over 49 lakh central government employees and nearly 65 lakh pensioners stand to benefit from the decision.
Since 1947, there have been seven Central Pay Commissions, each established every 10 years to revise the salaries and pensions of central employees.
Key Highlights:
The 8th Pay Commission has been set up well before the term of the 7th Pay Commission ends in 2026, allowing adequate time to receive recommendations, Ashwini Vaishnaw said.
The chairman and two members of the commission will be appointed soon, and consultations with central and state governments along with other stakeholders will take place.
Around 50 lakh central government employees, including defence personnel, are expected to see a salary hike, according to PTI sources.
Approximately 65 lakh pensioners, including defence personnel, will benefit from the revision.
The decision comes ahead of the Union Budget 2025, set for February 1, and the Delhi Assembly elections scheduled for February 5.
Nearly four lakh employees in Delhi, including state government employees and defence personnel, are also set to benefit.
